The Lantern Festival (元宵节) is the last day of the Chinese New Yearcelebration. This day is for the last moment for setting off fireworks, the lastexcuse for eating a big feast and the last chance for family getting togetherbefore the “年” celebrations are over. (Latern Festival is also a traditionaltime of celebration for foreigners who live in China).

The Lantern Festival, the 15th of the first month of the lunar calendar, isthe first full moon of the year. Celebrations and traditions on this day dateback to the Western Han Dynasty.

Traditions for this festival: as the name indicates, hanging and looking atlanterns is the main tradition. Lanterns of various shapes and sizes aredisplayed on trees, or along river banks.

Parents often take their children to Lantern Fairs and sometimes lucky kidseven get a mini toy lantern.

Another tradition is guessing lantern riddles. These are riddles that arehung on lanterns for people to shoot down and solve. The riddles are usuallyshort, wise, and sometimes humorous. The answer to a riddle can be a Chinesecharacter, a famous person s name, a place name or a proverb. This tradition hasbecome a popular game with serious staying power even as social developmentchanges other traditions.

Other than that, the most important thing to do today is to eat sweetdumplings. In northern China, sweet dumplings made of glutinous rice flour arecalled “元宵” while in southern part they are called “汤圆”. Typical sweet dumplingsare filled with black sesame sauce, sweetened bean paste, or hawthorn. Making“元宵” today is like a game or an activity, so it s seldom done without a reasonand a group of friends or family present to help out.

the lantern festival or yuanxiao jie is a traditional chinese festival,which is on the 15th of the first month of the chinese new year. the festivalmarks the end of the celebrations of the chinese new year.

chinese started to celebrate the lantern festival from the han dynasty (206bc - 221 ad). like most other chinese festivals, there is also a story behindthe festival. it is also believed that the festival has taoist origins.

this is a festival for people having fun. on the night of the festival,people go on streets with a variety of lanterns under the full moon, watchinglions or dragon dancing, playing chinese riddles and games, and lighting upfirecrackers. there is really a lot of fun for the young and the old.

yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) or tangyuan is the special food for thelantern festival. it is believed that yuanxiao is named after a palace maid,yuanxiao, of emperor wu di of the han dynasty. yuanxiao is a kind of sweetdumpling, which is made with sticky (瓜皮是什么意思?四川人说瓜皮可能有以下三种意义:一是此人是傻子,神经有问题;二是此人不聪明,反应比较迟钝;三是此人是其最喜爱的人,瓜皮是对他的爱称。)rice flour filled with sweet stuffing.
